Hamsters are creatures of short stature and if they contract any kind of hamster illness they tends to fall sick very rapidly. Some of the common signs of illness are loss of appetite, coughs, allergic reactions, discharge from eyes and nose, wet tails, and sneezing. As stated previously, if your hamster falls ill to any of these conditions seek the support of a vet quickly.

Common Hamster Illness:

Colds: A hamster easily catches cold. It is a common hamster illness. When you notice signs of watery eyes, runny nose, or lethargy it is likely that your hamster has contracted cold. These symptoms are not common hamster traits, so when you see them, it’s likely because he or she is sick. Just like humans, hamsters too are very prone to catching colds. Although sneezing is not usually a problem for hamsters, sneezing due to a respiratory infection can cause pneumonia. This would be very serious for your little pocket pet. Keeping the hamster warm and giving vicks to inhale is a good first step. In addition, lukewarm milk with honey can also be given. If the cold persists for more than two days, a veterinarian’s suggestion should be considered.

Wet Tail: Wet tail is a highly contagious disease and is also known by the name of proliferative ileitis and regional enteritis. This is a bacterial infection where the diarrhoea becomes so severe that it results in constant wet tail. The most common symptoms of this hamster illness are a hunched back, pain, lethargy and a wet tail. If these symptoms are present, withhold the supply of fresh vegetables and fruits immediately. A major concern when a hamster contracts wet tail is dehydration. The supply of fresh water should be more frequent. Above all, the advice of the veterinarian is very important.

Ringworm: The increase in the use of foreign materials such as plastic cages, nesting boxes, potty boxes, chewing toys, wheels, and substrate can often lead to contagious fungal infection or illness like ringworm. This infection can be easily spotted by distinct round patches on the body of your hamster. If you are housing more than one hamster in a cage then at the slightest sign of this hamster illness, you will have to immediately remove the other hamsters and house them separately.
